CELEBRITIES TURN OUT FOR THE SUCCESSFUL
WHITEWELD FOUNDATION JAZZ CONCERT AT CARNEGIE HALL

The Whiteweld Foundation Hosts Concert Featuring
Jazz Legends Nancy Wilson and The Count Basie Orchestra

New York, NY
January 26, 2004 – The Whiteweld Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping children, recently hosted an evening of jazz at Carnegie Hall starring Nancy Wilson and the Count Basie Orchestra to benefit United Way. More than two thousand people attended the show, which also attracted celebrities from the worlds of television and music. The performance was a fund-raiser with proceeds supporting United Way’s Homeless Initiative, which provides food banks and shelter to homeless children and their families throughout the New York metropolitan area.

Tony Perkins, weatherman for ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America,” served as emcee for the concert. In addition to his work seen daily on the national morning program, Perkins is renowned for his knowledge and love of music. His background as a former stand-up comedian helped set a light-hearted and anticipatory tone for the evening’s entertainment.

The Count Basie Orchestra, led by current bandleader Bill Hughes, used the Carnegie Hall concert to officially launch 2004 as the 100th anniversary commemoration of the birth of William “Count” Basie. Basie is recognized as one of the most influential jazz pianists and big band leaders of all time.

Nancy Wilson lived up to her reputation as one of music’s original divas. She sang her biggest hits and a variety of popular standards, including a riveting version of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” The capacity crowd gave Ms. Wilson two standing ovations for her powerful set sung with backup by her touring trio and the Count Basie Orchestra.

Following the performance, Ms. Wilson met dignitaries, special guests and fans at a V.I.P. ‘Meet and Greet’ hosted by The Whiteweld Foundation. Star Jones, host of ABC-TV’s “The View” was among the celebrities that visited Wilson backstage. Rising jazz vocalist, Sarah Partridge, WBGO-FM personalities and television industry professionals also joined the backstage party. Board Members of The Whiteweld Foundation at the affair included Linda A. Bovino, Joel Belgard, Dominic Zinno, James N. Bovino Jr., Eleanor Bovino Zinno, Robyn Bovino, James J. Bovino, Linda E. Bovino, John J. Johnson, Jamie Slade and David Green.
